Preaching Formation
Inspired by our Dominican identity of preaching and seeking Truth, the Center of Continuing Education forms leaders equipped and energized to enact positive change within their communities through the ministry of the Word. By the nature of our baptism, we are each called to some work of evangelism and care for the Christian community. Working in partnership with various diocese and religious communities, the Center offers formation in preaching for priests, deacons, and those who serve in multicultural ecclesial settings.

Diaconal Formation
Following the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States of America, the Center offers initial formation for diaconal candidates in conjunction with their sponsoring diocese. As a graduate school of theology, our faculty train diaconal candidates to ensure readiness for a life in active ministry. This program is spread over five years and meets virtually. Any diocese looking for a diaconal training program is welcome to contact us to inquire about formation.
“Before all else, the Gospel invites us to respond to the God of love who saves us, to see God in others and to go forth from ourselves to seek the good of others.”
Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium
Post-Ordination Formation
In addition to preparing deacons for their ordination, the Center also offers ongoing formation opportunities for those who have already been ordained. This year long program focuses on perfecting the art of preaching with the individual deacon, as well as building a sense of collegiality among their brother deacons. Preaching is developed in the following ways:
- Foundations in Preaching
- Liturgy and Preaching
- Scripture and Exegesis
- Pastoral Sensitivity
- Personal Integration/Spirituality

Culturally Informed Preaching
From 2022 through 2025, Aquinas facilitated the New Frontiers in Preaching Certificate Program. This program was a set of courses and mentorship relationships to foster more compelling preaching among underserved communities in the US Catholic Church by recognizing the role that permanent deacons and lay associates play in preaching and evangelizing the people of God. The pedagogy and ongoing legacy of this program equips our institution to add supplemental training in preaching in both the Black Catholic and Hispanic contexts. The above mentioned programs may include this focus upon request.
