The appointment was made by the Provincial Council of the Province of St. Albert the Great upon the recommendation of the Board of Trustees of Aquinas Institute. Fr. Wedig is a Dominican friar and a member of the Southern Province of St. Martin de Porres. A widely published scholar and a seasoned academic administrator, he comes to Aquinas Institute from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida where he served as Chair of the Department of Theology and Philosophy for nineteen years, and where he currently serves as professor of theology and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies. The official announcement and Fr. Wedig’s biography and curriculum vitae follows below.
Upon his appointment by the Provincial Council and the Board of Trustees, Fr. Wedig was officially introduced to the Aquinas faculty and staff on Wednesday, November 30th, 2018 by Dave Wenzel, chairman of the Board of Trustees. Wenzel called Fr. Wedig the ideal candidate to lead Aquinas Institute. “Fr. Mark brings to Aquinas over twenty-five years of experience as a theologian, a scholar, a professor of theology, and a successful administrator in graduate theological studies in the Dominican tradition. In addition to his outstanding credentials, Fr. Mark has a deep understanding of Aquinas Institute and the Dominican traditions of preaching and scholarship. We have been blessed to have Fr. Mark as a member of our Board of Trustees for the past four years, where we have seen his enthusiasm and commitment to the Aquinas mission and its role in preparing ministers to serve the evolving needs of the Church. I am confident Aquinas Institute will thrive under Fr. Wedig’s visionary leadership.”
On behalf of the Aquinas Institute community, Fr. Marchionda and Mr. Wenzel would like to express their deep gratitude to Fr. Seán Martin for his outstanding leadership of Aquinas Institute these past five years. Fr. Marchionda notes that “Fr. Seán has served Aquinas and the Dominican Order most competently and with great generosity and we are pleased that after a well-deserved sabbatical, Fr. Martin will return to Aquinas Institute as President Emeritus and resume his full-time faculty position teaching biblical studies.”
Fr. Marchionda and Mr. Wenzel thank the Aquinas board, and the faculty and staff for their support during the search process. Plans are in place for a seamless leadership transition over the coming months and there will be opportunities for the students, supporters, and friends of Aquinas Institute to meet our new president. Please join the Aquinas community in congratulating Fr. Mark and welcoming him to Aquinas Institute.
