Job Title: Hospital/Pastoral Care: Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital
Location: St. Louis
State: Missouri
Position Description:
14561 North Outer Forty Road
Chesterfield, Mo 63017

Description: Mercy is an acute care rehab hospital for Comprehensive rehab as well as Stroke, Spinal Cord, and Traumatic Brain Injuries. The patients do three hours of therapy a day: physical, occupational, and speech (as needed).  The goal is that each patient come to as much independence as possible and return home. Our census is between sixty and seventy-five patients.

Patients stay generally for two or three weeks so there is an opportunity to develop relationships and follow the patient’s journey, often in new life-altering circumstance. We do initial visits to offer spiritual support for the hard work to get well. On Sunday there is the opportunity to facilitate a non-denominational Scripture sharing and a brief preaching can be offered. We share in the Sunday Liturgy. Currently, Father Tom Bryon celebrates Mass and offers the anointing of the sick following the homily.

In addition, there are great opportunities for one-on-one visits during the noon break (11:30 am – 1:00 pm) and between their scheduled therapies

Requirements: The student needs to complete the volunteer OSHA training at Mercy Hospital-Conway and Ballas as well as other health screenings such as TB tests prior to being on the floor. Mercy provides the health screenings. Badges are issued and must be worn while on location.

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday; Sunday mornings: 8:30am-12:00noon or beyond if they wish to stay and visit patients; hours to be negotiated and arranged to fit student’s schedule.

Supervisor biographical statement:

I graduated from Aquinas Institute in 1987 and I have been a NACC certified chaplain since 1983. I worked at St. Mary’s health center in the acute care hospital for seven years and became Director of the SSM Rehab from 1994-2009 when they merged with Select to build their Rehab hospital up at DePaul.

Since that time I worked to relieve chaplains (vacation, etc.) at St. Joseph’s in St. Charles and part time at St. Anthony’s health center. In 2010, I took the position as chaplain for Mercy’s Rehab hospital. It is the most healing environment I have had the opportunity to work in and maybe the “best was saved for last.”

Recently Mercy sister, Sr. Beth Dempsey, joined our team. She has done parish work in New Jersey for many years and is one of sisters who are here at Mercy Center providing community for the women in their Novitiate.

Approach to supervsiion: Collaborative; sharing experience and allowing some shadowing but great freedom to see patients and follow up. Some mentoring on initial visits and spiritual assessments.
