<title>Jewish Scholar of New Testament to Offer Evening of Discussion, Dialogue at Aquinas Institute of Theology</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/152/Jewish-Scholar-of-New-Testament-to-Offer-Evening-of-Discussion-Dialogue-at-Aquinas-Institute-of-Theology.aspx</link>
<description>(ST. LOUS) – Aquinas Institute of Theology, Eden Theological Seminary and the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Newmark Institute for Human Relations are pleased to co-sponsor an evening of discussion and dialogue with Amy-Jill Levine, a Jewish scriptural scholar devoted to New Testament and Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University. Her presentation will center on her study of New Testament texts from a Jewish perspective.
This event will take place on the evening of Sunday, September 23, and begins at 7:00 pm, at Aquinas Institute of Theology, 23 South Spring Avenue, Saint Louis, Missouri 63108. This evening will be supported by free-will offerings from those present. Pre-registration is encouraged; Call 314.442.3871 or send e-mail to abaer@jcrcstl.org.
Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences. Holding a B.A. from Smith College, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University, Professor Levine held office in the Society of Biblical Literature, the Catholic Biblical Association, and the Association for Jewish Studies. Her books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus, the edited collection, The Historical Jesus in Context, and the fourteen-volume edited series, Feminist Companions to the New Testament and Early Christian Writings. With Marc Brettler of Brandeis University, she has edited the Jewish Annotated New Testament, and she has written, with her Vanderbilt Colleague Douglas Knight, The Meaning of the Bible: What The Jewish Scriptures and the Christian Old Testament Can Teach us. In 2011, Professor Levine became Affiliated Professor at the Woolf Institute: Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations at Cambridge, UK. Professor Levine combines historical-critical rigor, literary-critical sensitivity, and a frequent dash of humor with a commitment to eliminating anti-Jewish, sexist, and homophobic theologies.

Aquinas Institute of Theology, Eden Theological Seminary and the Jewish Community Relations Council’s Newmark Institute for Human Relations have collaborated as dialogue partners for many years, jointly hosting a public lecture and dialogue each fall. A chapter in Will Herberg’s famous book, Protestant, Catholic and Jew, is entitled, “The Three Religious Communities: Unity and Tensions,” and says that there can be no lasting unity that does not honestly address tensions between and among Jewish and Christian discussion partners. Aquinas, Eden and JCRC are proud to have been working for Unity between our religious communities and to do so in the context of an honest, positive approach to these tensions. The annual lecture and dialogue attends to the important work needed to be done between Protestants, Catholics and Jews.
Aquinas Institute of Theology is a Roman Catholic graduate school located in Saint Louis, Missouri, sponsored and administered by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), Province of Saint Albert the Great. Offering a number of graduate degree and certificate programs, Aquinas Institute’s foundation in the Catholic faith and Dominican mission is to educate men and women to preach, to teach, to minister, and to lead.

<title>Rev. Mr. Dennis Chitwood Honored with Aquinas Institute's 2011 Great Preacher Award</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/132/Rev-Mr-Dennis-Chitwood-Honored-with-Aquinas-Institutes-2011-Great-Preacher-Award.aspx</link>
<description>(St. Louis) Aquinas Institute of Theology is pleased to honor Reverend Mr. Dennis Chitwood, M.A.P.S., Deacon of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, as the 2011 recipient of its annual Great Preacher Award. The Great Preacher Award will be presented to Deacon Chitwood on Thursday, October 27, 2011, at Rose of the Hill, 2300 Edwards, in St. Louis.
Aquinas Institute, run by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), instituted the Great Preacher Award in 1995 to recognize those who by their words and actions have contributed in an outstanding way to the building up of the Catholic community. Aquinas Institute considers the Great Preacher Award a powerful means of renewing the Church and promoting good preaching while sharing its Dominican charism. The award is intended not only to sustain preachers of the Word but also to help Catholics become more attuned to hearing the Word.
Born in St. Louis, Mr. Chitwood attended St. Bernadette Grade School in Lemay and Bishop DuBourg High School in South St. Louis. He attended Harris Teacher College, Washington University, and Pope Paul VI Institute of Catechetical and Pastoral Studies. In 1994, he earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies (M.A.P.S.) from Aquinas Institute of Theology.
Deacon Dennis Chitwood was ordained in the Archdiocese of St. Louis on January 28, 1984. His first assignment after ordination was at St. Mary Magdalen parish in South St. Louis, where he served as a pastoral associate and oversaw teen and adult formation efforts. In 1989, he began serving as a pastoral associate at Sts. Peter and Paul parish in the Soulard area. In 1994, Deacon Chitwood became director of the Catholic Newman Center and campus ministry for the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and in that leadership role he helped implement programs such as the Spring Break Alternative, Taize prayer, Hunger Awareness Week, and the Awakening Retreat. During that time, he also was director/liaison for the Catholic Charismatic Center (now Catholic Renewal Center). In 2000, Deacon Chitwood went to Cur&#233; of Ars parish in Shrewsbury, leading the young adult ministry there. In 2002, he was assigned to All Saints parish in University City, where he also worked with young adult ministry. He then took up service with Annunciation parish in Webster Groves in 2005. Currently he is in semi-retirement, serving at the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul in Soulard.
In addition to his parish roles, Deacon Chitwood has also offered pastoral service for many young adult ministries, including Teens Encounter Christ, the Silver Trumpets youth ministry, which he helped to found in the 1980s, and the Upper Room young adult ministry. Mr. Chitwood was also a chaplain at St. Louis University and with the Boy Scouts of America. He taught Advanced Homiletics for deacons at Pope Paul VI Institute in St. Louis, and was an instructor of Catholic charismatic spirituality. Along with many other ministries in the St. Louis archdiocese, in 2005 he and his wife Elizabeth co-founded Genesis Ministry, which offers spiritual counseling, teaching, preaching, parish missions, and retreats.
Deacon Chitwood’s service has carried him far outside St. Louis’s boundaries as well. In 1998 Deacon Chitwood joined the mission team with Renewal Ministries of Ann Arbor, Mich. With that group, he made mission trips in Ghana in 1998, Uganda in 1999, and Kenya in 2005. He is currently planning a mission trip to Costa Rica.
Aquinas Institute recognizes Dennis Chitwood’s work and leadership as a preacher in both word and service, and wishes to affirm him in his ministry and hold him up as an exemplar of the power of engaging preaching.

<title>Former Aquinas President is new Prior Provincial for Dominican Central Province</title>
    <link>http://www.ai.edu/AboutUs/PressReleases/tabid/69/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/125/Former-Aquinas-President-is-new-Prior-Provincial-for-Dominican-Central-Province.aspx</link>
<description>(St. Louis) Fr. Charles E. Bouchard, O.P., was elected Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great (Central Province) on 14 June 2011. Twenty-four representatives of the Order of Preachers traveled in June from all over the Midwest United States and from Bolivia to a meeting hosted by St. Vincent Ferrer Priory in River Forest, Illinois, for the 18th Provincial Chapter, where they elected Fr. Bouchard as Provincial, as well as electing other Dominican brothers to fill other leadership positions.
Priorities for the provincial leadership team include strengthening Catholic preaching and finding ways for the order to integrate laypeople into roles of responsibility in Catholic schools, healthcare institutions, and other ministries.
“If Catholic ministries are to flourish, there has to be an added value that is rooted in our heritage and spiritual tradition,” Bouchard said, “and preaching is the lifeblood of the Church. Dominicans can be a catalyst for great preaching throughout the Church. It is fundamental to what we do.”
Guiding his work by these priorities, Bouchard enjoyed considerable success in St. Louis. Aquinas Institute of Theology, which he led from 1989 to 2008, grew from 55 students to more than 300. During his tenure, the school introduced the nation’s only Catholic doctoral program in preaching and the first Master of Arts degree in health care mission, a program to prepare lay leaders in Catholic health care to sustain the ministries in the context of fewer vowed religious women. The school also introduced online theological education for students in regions removed from seminaries and Catholic universities. In 2006, the graduate school moved from space it had occupied at Saint Louis University into a renovated industrial space near the campus.
After leading Aquinas Institute, Bouchard became vice president of theological education for Ascension Health, the largest Catholic health care system in the United States. He worked with boards of directors, senior executives, physicians and hospital managers to form in them a deeper grasp of and commitment to the mission of Catholic health care.
Bouchard joined the Dominican order in 1974 and was ordained in 1979. He earned a doctoral degree in moral theology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He has lectured, preached and written on the topics of fundamental ethics, sexual and health care ethics, and morality and public policy.
Fr. Andrew Carl Wisdom, promoter of vocations for the Province, said Bouchard “will bring his abundance of creativity, vision, and energy to his role as Prior Provincial as he has to all his other ministries. His gifts align providentially with the challenges as well as wonderful opportunities awaiting the province.”
