Description:
Lydia’s House provides transitional housing for abused women and their children. The housing is confidentially located for the safety of the residents. Lydia’s House currently has two sites for its transitional housing with the capacity to serve 36 women and up to 70 children. The population of Lydia’s House is racially and ethnically diverse, and the women and children come from a variety of religious backgrounds.

Students may facilitate or assist in facilitating spiritual support circles for the women, children and teens. They may provide assistance for the after-school program and the weekly community meals. There will be other opportunities, such as accompanying the women and children on family outings or visiting local churches to share mission moments, which may arise on an irregular basis.
 
Requirements:
*Each student intern will need to fill out a volunteer application which includes a background check.
* A Missouri background screening must be completed and the results received prior to working at Lydia’s House.
*Illinois residents are required to have the Illinois background screening completed with the results received prior to the start of the semester.
*Each student is required to attend domestic violence training and the Lydia’s House orientation. It is preferred that the student complete these before beginning SPM.
 
Schedule:
Most of our programming takes place between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Supervisor's Bio/Additional Comments:
Carolyn Held is an ordained chaplain in the United Church of Christ. She holds an M.Div. from Eden Theological Seminary in Webster Groves, Missouri, and has completed four units of CPE. Carolyn has been the chaplain at Lydia’s House since September 2003.

Rev. Held could potentially serve as an off-site supervisor for an intern who has another ministry site, but is unable to find a qualified supervisor on-site.
