(ST. LOUS) – Aquinas Institute of Theology will host an interfaith dialogue and discussion evening on Sunday, August 28, 2011. This event, Christian Anti-Semitism Today: What Is It? Where Is It? How Do We Respond?, will feature dialogue between Father John Pawlikowski and Rabbi Yehiel Poupko, and will also offer opportunity for audience discussion.
Fr. John Pawlikowski is Professor of Ethics and the Director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies Program at the University of Chicago. Recognition for his work in Christian-Jewish dialogue and his study of the Nazi Holocaust led to his appointment in 1980 by President Carter to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 1980. Fr. Pawlikowski is past president of the International Council of Christians and Jews and has written a number of books focused on Christian-Jewish relations.
Rabbi Yehiel Poupko is Judaic Scholar at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago where his responsibilities include interfaith activities. He recently accompanied Cardinal Francis George on a visit to Israel. He offers a Jewish perspective as a writer in Christian publications including National Catholic Reporter, Christian Century, Christianity Today, and Sojourners. Rabbi Poupko is active as an author, having written “Looking at Them; Looking at Us: A Jewish Understanding of Christian Responses to Israel” and a number of other articles on interfaith topics.
Co-sponsors for this event include Aquinas Institute of Theology, Eden Theological Seminary, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of St. Louis, Michael and Barbara Newmark Institute for Human Relations. Supporting organizations include The Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, Interfaith Partnership/Faith Beyond Walls, and the Saint Louis Rabbinical Association.
Pre-registration for this program is encouraged, and those attending are asked to support the event with a free-will offering.
