FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Aquinas Institute of Theology Receives Grant to Support the Theological Education and Ministerial Preparation of Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate

Aquinas Institute of Theology is pleased to announce the receipt of a $15,000.00 grant from an anonymous donor to support the theological education and ministerial preparation of Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate. This generous funding will be used to underwrite the cost of sign language interpreters who assist Dominican Missionaries students.

"Because Deaf Ministry is not a prominent ministry in the Catholic Church, this grant enables the Founder and Prior General of the Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate, Fr. Thomas Coughlin, O.P., Miss., the sole breadwinner of the community, to continue payments to the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters," explained Br. Joseph Thermadom, O.P., Miss, a current deaf student who will soon be in his last year of study.

Brother Adam Zawadzki, O.P., Miss, the Prior of the local house in Illinois, further explained that interpreters cost Dominican Missionaries approximately $6,000-$9,000 per year, and that the standard hourly rate for an interpreter is $25-$50 per hour.

"This grant will greatly assist the Dominican Missionaries in their ability to continue providing interpreters for Brother Joseph," said Br. Zawadzki, O.P., Miss. "The Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate thank the both this donor and Aquinas Institute of Theology for including Deaf people in the Body of Christ," said Br. Thermadom, O.P., Miss.

Since the Fall semester of 2010, Aquinas Institute has been offering classes to students who are deaf. Through sign language interpreters, these students are able to take the same courses as everyone else.

"Aquinas Institute is grateful to this generous unnamed donor who understands that ministerial preparation for those to serve the deaf community is worthy of support," said Aquinas Institute President, Rev. David G. Caron, O.P.
